Safer Skincare + Beauty

Hey, I'm Diane and I have cranky skin.

As a teenager I wore my hair down around my face to hide the painful acne on my cheeks. It disappeared in college and then resurfaced with a vengeance around 2015. For the next 2 years I struggled with flare-ups, many that brought me to tears when they stayed for weeks.

Call it vanity, but if you’ve dealt with recurring acne, you know how frustrating it can be especially when you’ve tried all of the “right” skincare things. I even worked in a plastic surgery and skincare practice for 3.5 years, why weren’t their solutions working?

Healing Inside / Out

I started following a real food diet — one with lots of nutrient-dense veggies and responsibly raised animals — in order to improve my digestive issues (the root cause!). I started to feel better and, in time, my skin looked better. I did an elimination diet and saw drastic improvements in my skin’s texture, clarity, and brightness.

I continued incorporating a healthy lifestyle (via diet, exercise, mindset) and while I still encountered breakouts, they were less frequent. Ever curious, I wanted to dig deeper.

U.S. Regulations for Personal Care Products Suck

I became diligent about vetting nutrition labels for harmful ingredients, but less so about my makeup and skincare. I assumed there were strong regulations for beauty products and that my regimen was innocuous.

Nope.

The U.S. hasn’t passed a federal law to regulate ingredients in personal care products since 1938 and we are embarrassingly behind compared to other countries.

In fact, the U.S. only partially bans 30 harmful ingredients compared to 1,300 that are prohibited in the E.U!

Our skin is our largest organ, and the products we use are absorbed into our bloodstream in 26 seconds (Source). So why hasn’t the U.S. improved their safety regulations for personal care products?

Hormone dysregulation, infertility, and cancer are on the rise due not only to diet and lifestyle choices, but also environmental factors and products that we apply to our skin every day.

What we consume, how we think, and how we move matter. And so do the topical products that we use.

We deserve better, both in food regulations and in the beauty industry. That’s why I decided to add my voice to the mission as a Beautycounter consultant.

Why Beautycounter

I have high standards for skincare and beauty products after working in a professional skincare setting (my bathroom cabinets were a Sephora and skincare product graveyard)!

As I shifted toward a more holistic lifestyle I was curious about introducing cleaner products. I used jojoba oil as my moisturizer and started using the Think Dirty app and Environmental Working Group (EWG) database to understand ingredients (excellent free resources!)

I heard of Beautycounter and was intrigued by their mission, but I had my doubts that their products could stand up to my conventional faves.

Last year my mentor and O.G. safer skincare guru Liz Wolfe introduced me to the No. 3 Balancing Mask. My cranky skin loveddd this clay mask and it ended up being my “gateway” Beautycounter skincare product. Then I met the Color Intense lipsticks that held up just as well as my “Big Cosmo” products.

I realized I didn’t have to sacrifice performance and shades for safety. (See more of my favorites, below).

Leading the Change

Beyond high-performing, safer products Beautycounter is shaking up the beauty industry by educating and advocating for stricter regulations on personal care products.

To date, we’ve banned more than 1,500 harmful or questionable ingredients through our “Never List”, all while ensuring our products PERFORM and feel as indulgent as other luxe skincare and cosmetic brands on the market.

Your beauty and skincare regimen should be good for you, not inundating your body with unnecessary toxic chemicals that link to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive issues. (Source).

Beautycounter is more than a beauty company — it’s a movement

We are taking action in Washington D.C. by working to reform outdated laws so that everyone can have access to safer products. I am proud to be a part of a company that is leading the change!
